I miss fresh baked torillas. I really miss Mexican food. I really(dash)really miss New Mexican dinners. For example, have you ever been to the Frontier (my little sister always though I was crazy for loving this place but take it away and look what you get…)?
Play along with me here, you State-siders. Imagine a world where no one wants hot food. Where nobody sees the difference between hot Indian, or hot Thai and hot Mexican. That is what it is like here in the UK. I haven’t met anyone yet who really knows the difference between red and green chilis, nevermind what “Christmas” is! And just for your information, Mexico and India have about a billion things not-in-common. Just because they both have flat breads doesn’t mean that flat bread and tortillas are the same thing. They are, in fact, millions of miles away from each other in palatial terms, as well as geographic.
I was really in the mood for chips and salsa so I went to the local store, the main grocery and closest to me by about 5 miles. They had jars of about 100ml of salsa for about $3.00. At home, I could get about 250ml for that price. I completely forget how many ounces that translates to, and that just shows how long I’ve been here! I bought the salsa, and as insurance, I also bought a 100ml jar of jalapeno peppers, sliced. Sadly, the peppers and the salsa were both about a 4 on the 10-being-highest hot scale. I was really going for a 7 that day.
I leave you with this last thought. I went to that same store today for a cheap, quick lunch. I found a pack of pork and mustard sausages (I think it was 6 total on a link) for 99 pence (approximately $2). Knowing this was what I would have for lunch, I thought I would get sour kraut to go with it. I asked where the sour kraut would be if it were in the store and the woman looked for it, eventually saying “how does it usually come?” I knew right then there was NO WAY they would have sour kraut in shop. My side dish was purple onions and bread. My thought: I know it seems strange, but I really do miss hot food and sour kraut. Allora…

I totally agreed with the dearth of Mexican food problem. Have you tried buying black beans to go with a quesadilla? Ridiculous.
That said, I’ve never had a real meal of fish and chips in the states, so I’ll take the switch for a few more months.
